6 Things you should know about a good night's sleep

The importance of sleep for a person’s health and wellbeing is commonly overlooked in present society where life gets so busy and overwhelming that a good night’s sleep often gets compromised.

It will amaze you how much sleeping well can make a difference in your life, both mentally and physically wise. Below are a few reasons (in no particular order) why getting a good night’s sleep is important for you.

1. Improves brain function

For cognitive processes such as concentration, productivity and performance, getting good sleep is highly important. It improves your problem-solving skills, memory and attention span which can allow for more effective learning, productiveness and retainment of knowledge.

Sleep deprivation on the other hand, will affect these brain functions negatively.

2. Enhances athletic performance

Good sleep will also enhance many aspects of athletic and physical performance which includes speed, focus, accuracy and reaction times. Getting sufficient sleep also helps with muscle recovery and glucose metabolism, which plays a major role in improving athletic performance.

3. Reduces the risk of heart disease and stroke

Poor sleep quality and/or insufficient sleep can greatly increase the risk of getting heart disease or a stroke, therefore getting enough sleep is very important in order to lessen the chances of such problems arising.

4. Improved mood

Inadequate sleep causes people to become more irritable, upset, angry and stressed. Getting a sufficient amount of sleep will show dramatic improvements in mood and emotion.

5. Prevents weight gain

Not getting enough sleep increases the risk of becoming obese and people who don’t sleep enough tend to weigh a lot more than those who get sufficient sleep. Getting quality sleep is important if you are trying to lose weight.

6. Improves immune function

Getting an adequate amount of sleep can improve your immune function which makes it less likely for you to get sick. Sleep deprivation on the other hand will weaken the immune system and leave you less protected against illnesses.
